Character
Name: Bellara Lutare
Canon: Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Canon point: Just before the eclipse in The Shadowed Sun
CRAU?: N/A
Age: 31-32 according to her writer, John Epler.
History: Wiki link and I'll expand into some bullet points as the Veilguard section is...very small.

  • Prior to Vows and Vengeance - and prior to Veilguard - Bellara had a younger brother named Cyrian. The two of them were very interested in Dalish and elven history, and sought out any information they could about it, including ancient artifacts.
  • At some point, Bellara joined the Veil Jumpers, Dalish (and others) who prioritized accessing knowledge and artifacts from the Ancient Elves in the hopes of understanding their history and using it to help others. Cyrian did not join them; he continued his pursuit of knowledge separately.
  • At one point, Bellara helped her brother with an artifact but something went wrong and he disappeared; Bellara feared him dead, and has blamed herself for his disappearance.

  • Bellara joins the party after searching for an artifact called the Nadas'dirthalen. The team tells her about two elven gods returning to take over the world through the Blight.
  • The team goes to search for fellow Veil Jumpers in D'Meta's Crossing, proceed to find everyone blighted or dead, and meet with the mayor. And, briefly, a horrible dragon.
  • The team decides to work on taking down the gods. Bellara fixes their main fast travel feature: the Eluvian, a mirror connecting to the 'Crossroads' in the Fade, so they can go to other Eluvian mirrors and go wherever they need to.
  • The team recruits Lucanis Dellamorte, assassin, and Davrin, a Warden.
  • Two dragons attack because of the gods: one goes to Treviso, a merchant city; the other goes to Minrathous. The team splits to try to resolve this.

  • [DECISION POINT: Rook chooses to help TREVISO over Minrathous. Treviso is saved (though damaged) but Minrathous is blighted, the Viper (a high ranking member of the Shadow Dragons faction in Minrathous) is blighted as well. The Venatori, a cult in service to the gods, launches a coup over Minrathous' noble seats and succeed. Neve, the Veilguard companion from Minrathous, stays to help and temporarily leaves the team.]

  • The team recovers, and recruits a necromancer named Emmrich Volkarin and Taash, a dragon hunter.
  • The team continues to investigate pockets of Blight, cultists, and follow the trail of the gods in an effort to expose them, kill their dragons, and then kill them. (In killing the dragons, the gods will be left mortal.)
  • The gods attack the Warden stronghold named Weisshaupt. Many Wardens die but the one god's (Ghilan'nain) dragon is killed and she is made mortal. The team fails to kill her.
  • The team regroups and admits that they need to deal with their personal demons to better refocus on the gods.
  • Each companion gets their own questline which features an enemy tied to the main quest:
  • Bellara finds her brother, Cyrian, whom she has believed to be dead. He was saved by Anaris, a Forgotten One, a sort of elven god that was banished. Anaris is attempting to gain a foothold in the mortal world once more. Bellara, shocked to see Cyrian and dismayed that he would ally himself with Anaris, tries to convince him to come back to her and the Veil Jumpers. Cyrian declines despite Bellara's pushing; he does, briefly, seem like he hears her but doesn't leave. Bellara's arc culminates in trying to stop Anaris' ritual. Cyrian betrays Anaris and sabotages the ritual, but Anaris returns and mortally wounds Cyrian. Once Anaris is killed by Rook and Bellara, Bellara holds Cyrian until he dies. He's given a proper burial.

  • [DECISION POINT: Bellara tells Rook that, after everything, she is considering letting the Archive (the Nadas'dirthalen) go, out of fear that others will use its power for evil. But Bellara and her brother worked hard to get the Archive, and it could help the elves in the future. Rook convinces Bellara to let the Archive go.]

I've skipped a lot of nitty-gritty details of all of the missions because any of the companions can go on these missions, so I focused more on Bellara herself. I can expound on these if you prefer but I felt it was going to get too tedious.

Personality: A first brush of Bellara paints her as someone inquisitive, excitable, and eager to help. She's mentioned as a very intelligent Veil Jumper capable of helping the Veilguard team with their problems and, sure enough, she is; she even goes back with the team to help them with their difficulties, no questions asked. Her eagerness comes from an understanding that the world will be in sure danger without true change and support, and Bellara easily voices her motivations around wanting to help the world and do her part. And that's really the core of who Bellara is: someone who desperately wants to help despite knowing her own shortcomings, someone whose heart is so firmly invested in doing good and helping others, that she risks wearing it on her sleeve and being disappointed. She has an avid curiosity for things outside of herself, and from all walks of life - she asks about serials from Tevinter's papers, she knows Neve as a famous detective, she wants to know so much about Emmrich's life work and the Necropolis, she's fascinated by the Shadow Dragons and wants to be one... The list goes on and on, but it shows that Bellara is someone who wants to know so much more of the world than what she's seen, and despite being entrenched in elven artifacts as her passion and expertise, she wants to see and experience so much more. And she knows her limited view of the world and her 'sheltered' knowledge (sheltered in the sense that she hasn't lived in big cities, as the Dalish are wandering nomads) that without knowing more, she won't be able to understand what she does in greater context.

Bellara comes across as someone who is quick to talk and will fill the silence with words even if she begins to ramble, and she's prone to being nervous around others if she feels she's bothering them. A pretty standard line is Bellara asking for someone and then immediately saying, "Oh, never mind." Bellara puts others before herself and knows she comes across as potentially strange and verbose, and she tries to rein herself in despite people acknowledging that her knowledge and help is invaluable. A similar refrain is that Bellara's mind conflicts with her heart; that she knows certain things logically but that her heart still might feel guilt or pain regardless. And as tender as her heart is, her openness and understanding - or her attempts to understand - help her be part of the glue that keeps the team together and supported, and helps to drive the desire to support the factions and their allies as much as they can during the game.

Powers and abilities: An actual list of abilities is here but to avoid the jargon and game stats... Bellara is a mage, though she uses an artifact that is a gauntlet and bow all in one, so she channels her magic through it to create magic arrows. Her favored element is lightning and she is very skilled at manipulating the Fade both through artifacts and on her own. She can create magic projectiles to harm enemies, can use artifacts to slow down time temporarily, and can manipulate the Fade to drag enemies to a focal point and then damage them. She is also able to use some kind of healing ability, though it's not very clear if this is Fade-manipulation, straight up healing magic, or if this is just using an artifact. The description implies it's magical in nature, so I am going with it being Fade-manipulation or healing magic.

There is a mission where Bellara and Neve work together to weaken and snap the tethered magic being used on all of them by a god, and it works to prevent them from falling under actual mind control. Bellara recognizes it at first as dangerous, old magic (likely because of her time spent around old artifacts and being in Arlathan, one of the Ancient Elven cities). Bellara and Neve unbind the magic (though it's not clear how) and Bellara says she is using her magic to conceal them but it'll be obvious in short order that they are not under anyone's spell. But it's telling that both of them - Bellara most of all - are strong enough to do this, that Bellara can sense the magic immediately AND manage to hold on to her sense of self long enough to help the team. This is really a foreshadowing for later, too, when Bellara is able (if chosen) to go against that same god in a mission further along.

Chosen faction: Sylph!

Suitability: Bellara comes from a dark fantasy canon so being in a fantasy game is not going to be a big deal for her! And while her world is kind of hanging in the balance, being convinced that helping THIS place/world in order to help her own will definitely get her invested in the game's structure and the needs of the NPCs and the world itself.

Questions, comments, and concerns: I can't see the other castmate's applications so I'm mostly just assuming what the decision points are based on what I could gleam from the TDM. But if it's conflicting with the cast to the point of difficulty, I can change it!
